BREAKING! iSlate has no 3G, tethers to iPhone
Rumors are a tricky thing for me, because I always get sent early prototypes of every device worth knowing about, and I’ve had versions of the iSlate since Steve started making them in 2002, so I don’t need to speculate about what the revolutionary product might end up being like. And it’s not like I’m going to start leaking some of the 100% legit information I already have, because unlike some other journalists I won’t name, I value the NDAs I sign.
That said, if someone passes along a rumor that I know is true, I can report on that without violating my NDA, and thanks to a source of mine, I’ve got a doozy:
what about a device that could have tethering with your phone if you already own an iPhone?
That’s right; a little birdie tells me something I can neither confirm nor deny but which is totally true, which is that the upcoming iSlate won’t have 3G. It will only have Wifi and Bluetooth. Not much of a rumor, you say? Well, check out the reason why: the iSlate is built to be permanently tethered to your iPhone, so it doesn’t need 3G of its own, meaning you can take it anywhere you take your iPhone, which is most of the world.
While you might think this is a crappy bit of news, because not everyone has an iPhone, it’s actually genius, jackass. Think about it: everyone who buys an iSlate will already have an iPhone, and building it to tether means you can take advantage of the data plan that you already have. It’s so simple and so genius that only a simple genius like Steve Jobs could’ve come up with it.
Also, think of the audacity of this beautiful man: he’s essentially offering a $1,000 computer as an accessory to a phone.
God, I wish I could have his babies.

Look Moosebooger, I have held and used the iSlate, it works on Verizon’s 4G network, it’s an awesome game machine, eReader, VoIP device and more, it’s an iTouch on steroids on human growth hormones on methamphetamines, it’s so blisteringly awesomely fast, it should be illegal. It helps having an ex-girlfriend who still craves your manliness on the inside. It’s too bad the Verizon heavies found out and nearly twisted myarms out of my sockets, but I’d do it again in a heartbeat.
If you tether it to Verizon’s network, sure, but that’s a whole other mess of complications.
Erm… most networks, including O2 and Orange in the UK, require a separate data plan to cover tethering. So although the iPhone comes with unlimited data that data allowance cant be used for tethering… Not such a genius plan after all.
Apple was able to negotiate better plans for, like, the entire world, you don’t think they would have enough clout to get carriers to let tethering go through?
To date they havn’t had that clout with tethering the iPhone. Hopefully that will change; but i doubt it.
If you’ve got Apple demanding it PLUS millions of users, it’ll work.
Personally (from the NDAs I’ve seen) I’d have thought confirming or denying a rumour is against the NDA. That may just be me though…
I’m just reporting on a rumor, with no commentary at all.
I don’t think they will have a problem with whatever they ask as a price, think the islate is going to be pretty involved.
