Bing on the iPhone?

According to Reuters, Microsoft is trying to get Apple to dump Google as the default search engine on the fantastically successful iPhone in favor of Microsoft’s own Bing:

Apple Inc is talking to Microsoft Corp about stepping in as the default search engine on the iPhone, replacing Google Inc, according to report on Bloomberg’s web site.

Talks between Microsoft and Apple have been going on for weeks, the article said, citing two people familiar with the matter. Negotiations might not conclude quickly and might still fall apart, the article said.

Look, the bottom line here is that my close, personal friend Steve Jobs would never do something like this unless he had something up his sleeve. I haven’t asked Steve about this specifically yet, because even though I could just pick up the phone and he’d answer no matter what else he’s doing, I want to be a nice goddamn guy and respect the fact that he’s got a lot to worry about this week in the lead-up to his changing the world completely on the 27th, but I think it’s pretty obvious that the only way Apple would consider  such an odious partnership is if they’re going to sabotage Microsoft.

Now, I’m not saying I know how Apple will sabotage Microsoft, or what they’re going to do, but if I know Steve — and I do — it’ll be a revolutionary form of sabotage, unlike anything we’ve ever seen. Not only will Microsoft look stupid and possibly have to close its doors, but Apple will seem ridiculously more powerful by comparison. Hell, I wouldn’t be surprised if RIM comes off looking worse, even though they have nothing to do with any of this.
