On Gruber, Fads, and Idiocy

So the other day John Gruber did one of his chaaaaarming “claim chowder” bits where he quotes PCWorld’s Katherine Noyes claiming that the iPad is a fad:

Mark my words: The device — and all the others of its ilk that have sprung up for a piece of the action — are nothing more than a passing fad, at least in the mainstream.

Gruber followed that up with a post titled “I’ll show you a fad,” where he posted a link to this video:

Once people see one in person, they want one.

Now, never mind the fact that this isn’t true for everyone who sees an iPad; I know people who goddamn flip after seeing it, but I know people who say “yeah, it’s cool, but I’d rather get a full computer.” But that’s not even why I bring this up. I’m bringing it up to point out thoughtful John Gruber is: in his attempt to show how important the value of seeing the iPad in person is, as a way of showing that it isn’t a fad, he shows video from the Hudsucker Proxy, in which someone tries a Hula Hoop for the first time, and gets it. Only the Hula Hoop itself was itself a fad. So evidence that the iPad isn’t a fad is the popularity of the Hula Hoop, which was a fad?

Your logic, it hurts my brain.

Now, sure, Gruber might have been trying to be funny, or trying to say that the Hula Hoop is a fad while the iPad isn’t, with a similarity between them being the power of the demo, or maybe he got distracted midway through his very long post by staring at that mirror he hangs over his monitor so he can stare wistfully at the most smartest, most beautiful man in the world all day long, but whatever the case, his commentary blew.

Pet rock might have been a better example.

The boy with the hoop is a person with an iPad… the kids are Fandroids suddenly realizing how dumb they were… the store sells only square models that are heavy and don’t spin at a higher cost (Apple tax? yea…) but the Fandroids are happy with their heavy purchase because its “open” and its not Apple…

How high were you when you wrote this?

You should make a Gruber puppet. It would be just like Mosspuppet except even more pro-Apple. His head can be a giant Verizon iPad.
